Apple TV+ launched today in more than 100 countries and regions. The service costs $4.99 per month for a family subscription, with one year included for customers buying a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod touch.

Its opening catalog includes The Morning Show, See, Dickinson and For All Mankind, with episodes available through Apple's TV application and website. Programs can be streamed or downloaded, and Apple promises new originals each month without advertising.

Apple enters a crowded market with fewer titles than established rivals, using price, device reach and free trials to compensate. The company is treating original television as another service that can keep customers inside its ecosystem. Whether that strategy works will depend on programs people actively seek out; a polished application and installed base can place shows in front of viewers, but neither can make a thin library feel essential.
