Apple Arcade opens a subscription library without game ads
Apple launches Arcade with more than 100 games promised, offering one subscription across iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TV without advertisements.
Apple Arcade launched today in more than 150 countries as a new tab in the App Store. The service costs $4.99 per month after a trial and covers as many as six people through Family Sharing.
Subscribers can download games and play offline across iPhone, iPad and Apple TV, with Mac access arriving alongside the new operating system. Apple says Arcade titles contain no advertisements or additional purchases and that the catalog will grow beyond 100 games.
The subscription changes the incentive around mobile games: developers are paid to hold attention through the quality of a complete game instead of ads or repeated transactions. A curated library could also make discovery less exhausting. Its long-term value will depend on how often notable games arrive, how long they remain and whether players want another monthly entertainment bill.
