iPhone X replaces the home button with a new set of habits

A larger display, Face ID and gesture navigation mark Apple's biggest departure from the familiar iPhone front panel.

Apple's newly announced iPhone X removes the home button and stretches a 5.8-inch display across much of the front of the device. Face ID takes over authentication duties from the fingerprint reader, using the TrueDepth camera system. The phone is scheduled to reach stores on November 3.

Removing a button also removes a familiar landmark. Returning home and moving between applications now relies on gestures, so longtime iPhone owners will have something new to learn. Developers will need to account for the screen's shape and the area occupied by the camera hardware.

Wireless charging and the A11 Bionic chip add to the hardware story, but the interface change is the larger wager. Apple is asking buyers to accept a different way of handling an object they already use dozens of times a day.
