Apple’s iPhone announcement combines three products in one handheld: a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod, and an internet communicator with email, browsing, maps, and search.

The most visible change is the interface. A large multitouch screen replaces the physical keyboard and stylus, while sensors turn off the display near the user’s ear and adjust brightness automatically.

The June release will show whether customers accept a phone designed around software gestures. Apple is also tying the experience to iTunes, a carrier relationship, and a desktop-class web model.
