Google Chrome enters the browser market

Google launches Chrome with a multiprocess architecture, an emphasis on speed, and a browser designed for increasingly capable web applications.

Chrome arrives with a browser window that looks deliberately spare, leaving more room for pages and applications. Google says each tab runs in its own process to improve stability.

The project also brings V8, a new JavaScript engine designed for web applications. That choice reflects a web that increasingly behaves like software rather than a collection of documents. The initial beta is available for Windows, with other platforms still to follow.

Chrome’s arrival gives web developers another engine to test and gives users a fresh alternative in a browser market long shaped by Microsoft and Mozilla.
