PlayStation 5 begins Sony’s solid-state generation
Sony launches PlayStation 5 in its first markets, pairing a custom solid-state drive with a new controller and two console configurations.

Sony’s PlayStation 5 launched today in the United States, Japan and several other markets, with a wider release scheduled for November 19. The standard model costs $499.99; a $399.99 Digital Edition removes the disc drive.
Both versions use an AMD processor and graphics hardware, 16 GB of memory and a custom 825 GB solid-state drive intended to reduce loading delays. The DualSense controller adds adaptive triggers and detailed haptic feedback, while selected PlayStation 4 games remain playable.
The hardware arrives during a year when home entertainment carries unusual importance and store supply is constrained. Its fastest storage may change level design more profoundly than sharper pictures, but developers need time to build specifically for it. For buyers, the immediate case rests on launch software, backward compatibility and finding a unit in stock.
